Why does food use kilocalories instead of kilojoules?
Historical habit. The calorie (1 gram-calorie = 4.184 J) was the original thermal unit; nutritionists adopted the "large calorie" = 1 kcal = 1000 gram-calories. In Europe, nutrition labels now show both kJ and kcal; in the US mostly kcal (labelled as "Calories").
What is the difference between kWh and kW on my electric bill?
kW (kilowatt) is power β€” how fast energy flows. kWh (kilowatt-hour) is energy β€” the total amount used. A 2 kW heater running for 3 hours uses 2 Γ— 3 = 6 kWh. Bills charge by kWh, not kW.
Is 1 BTU the same as 1 Btu/h?
No. BTU is a unit of energy (β‰ˆ 1055 J). Btu/h (BTU per hour) is a unit of power. A 9000 Btu/h air-conditioner is a 2.6 kW cooling-power unit. Always check whether a specification is energy or power.
