Tips for pressure conversions

1 bar = 100,000 Pa = almost 1 atmosphere. The bar is common in European weather and industry.
1 atmosphere = 101,325 Pa = 14.696 psi = 1013.25 mbar.
Car tyre pressure is typically 2.0–2.5 bar (29–36 psi, 200–250 kPa).
Blood pressure is measured in mmHg worldwide (e.g., 120/80 mmHg).

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing absolute and gauge pressure β€” gauge is relative to atmospheric, absolute is from zero.
Mixing psi and bar when setting tyre pressures β€” roughly 14.5 psi per bar.
Using mmHg for engineering (should be Pa, kPa or bar).
Assuming standard atmosphere is exactly 1 bar β€” it's 1.01325 bar.

Pressure conversion FAQ

Why is blood pressure measured in mmHg?
Early blood-pressure cuffs (from 1896) used mercury columns. The reading "120 mmHg" literally meant the blood pressure could support a 120 mm column of mercury. Even with modern electronic monitors, the mmHg unit remains the global medical standard for historical continuity.
What is the difference between absolute and gauge pressure?
Gauge pressure reads zero at atmospheric pressure (~101 kPa). Absolute pressure reads zero at a perfect vacuum. A tyre at "2 bar gauge" is at 3 bar absolute. Most everyday pressures (tyres, tanks) are given as gauge; scientific contexts use absolute.
Is 1 bar the same as 1 atmosphere?
Nearly, but not exactly. 1 bar = 100,000 Pa exactly. 1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa. The difference (1.325%) is small but matters in precision work like scuba diving and aviation.
