1 hectare (10,000 m²) is about the size of a rugby pitch or 2.5 soccer fields. Most European farmland is measured in hectares.

1 acre ≈ 0.405 hectares. The US and UK measure rural land in acres.

European apartments are advertised in m², US homes in ft². 100 m² ≈ 1076 ft².

Always distinguish land area (horizontal) from floor area (interior). Property listings often refer to either.

Common mistakes to avoid

How big is one hectare visually?

One hectare is 100 × 100 metres = 10,000 m². That is roughly the size of a full international rugby pitch, or just under 2.5 US soccer fields. A typical European farm is several dozen hectares.

Why does the US measure homes in square feet and Europe in square metres?

The US never officially adopted the metric system. Most US real-estate markets list home sizes in square feet, including interior floor area. In Europe, listings use square metres for both land and floor area. 100 m² ≈ 1076 ft² — a useful benchmark.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

An acre is 4046.86 m², originally defined as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day. A hectare is 10,000 m² — a pure metric unit. 1 hectare ≈ 2.47 acres. Acres dominate US and UK farmland; hectares are the global standard.
