Speed conversion FAQ

What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is a scalar β€” just how fast something moves. Velocity is a vector β€” speed plus direction. In everyday language they are used interchangeably, but in physics velocity explicitly includes direction (e.g., "60 km/h north").
Why do aircraft use knots and feet instead of km/h and metres?
International civil aviation standardised on knots (nautical miles per hour) and feet (altitude) in the 1940s–50s. Nautical miles align with latitude (1 nm = 1 minute of arc), which made navigation simpler before GPS. The standard was kept for global consistency.
Is Mach 1 the same speed everywhere?
No. The speed of sound depends on air temperature (mainly) and pressure. At sea level in standard conditions, Mach 1 = 1225 km/h. At cruising altitude (~11 km) in much colder air, Mach 1 is only ~1062 km/h. Fighter jets measure speed in Mach precisely because this changes.
